Yet another very conservative Republican in a very conservative state introducing yet another piece of legislation based on something he heard. Enter SB1495. This legislation would require you to pee in a cup if you’re getting unemployment insurance.
Arizona State Senator Steve Smith (R-Maricopa) says “the only goal of his bill is to make sure unemployed people don’t spend their benefits on drugs.” and “The very least you ought to be able to do is prove that you’re of sound mind to get a job” because, you know, he “heard” about 1 person who allegedly said, following a failed pee test, he didn’t want the job in the first place. Because of this one persona non-gratisthe good Senator would have ALL the unemployed pee in a cup. Because every unemployed Arizonan receiving unemployment insurance must be high. Otherwise, they’d be working, right?
Perfectly RETARDED logic. And if that weren’t stupid enough, come to find out the good Senator’s proposal would actually increase costs on the very constituency he represents. According Democratic committee member, Rep. Matt Heinz (D_Tucson), “you had the Chamber of Commerce there jumping up and down, waving their arms and screaming, ‘No don’t do this!’” Even Farrell Quinlan, Arizona state director for the National Federation of Independent Businesses, said the bill, “has so many problems with federal conformity that it would be reckless to pass this bill.”
Here’s why: This “pee law” would eliminate significant federal tax credits to businesses. The co-director of the National Employment Law Project, Maurice Emsellem estimates that the average cost for business would increase from $42.00 per year per employee to $420.00. And under federal unemployment laws you cannot deny unemployment insurance to any one who has been laid off unless it was for fraud or receiving income from another source, even if they’re stoners.
Unafraid of the possibility this legislation could trigger a federal lawsuit, Senator Smith replies, “”Well, Arizona’s no stranger to lawsuits we’ve got everybody from the president on down suing us.” Aside from the fact the President isn’t personally suing the State of Arizona, Senator Smith’s statement is proof positive that he don’t’ really have a lick of sense, don’t really care about the increased costs his legislation would bring local businesses that HE represents, don’t really care that he seeks to “piss” away money we don’t really have in order to nail a few potheads and don’t really care that his legislation is part and parcel of the same twisted and misdirected logic that brought the Affordable Health Care Act before the Supreme Court. You know, that Republican “mandate”, Mr. Romney.
You first, Senator. Because only someone under the influence of some serious drugs (and we’re not talking about marijuana) would do something like this with no regard for the ramifications.
